This desk was another Gumtree purchase. It had some obvious damage and mismatched hardware to work with, but the shape and bones of this desk drew me in. I bought it off of a fellow in Bardon for about $40 and brought it home for cleaning, sanding, and structural repairs.
Initially, I thought I’d keep the desktop surface as natural wood, but after a photoshoot and a trial run in my office/studio space, something didn’t seem quite right. Despite lots of sanding there was still damage to the surface (though I like that look sometimes) and the orangey tones of the wood seemed off balance with the cool mint tones of the paint (again though, sometimes I like that contrast).
In the end, I pulled out the primer & paint and got my hands dirty again— and was happy I did. I think the cohesive colour and updated modern hardware on its curvy, antique shape give it a sleek but unique look. After all was said and done, I decided to keep this desk for my office/studio space. It has served me well in this new version of itself, and has been home-base for many of the designs and creative projects that appear on this website.
